The BFA Franchisor Guide gives guidelines on all aspects of franchising including:

  • A full list of BFA Member companies, what they do, contact details, investment costs and more
  • A list of Affiliate advisors which include: Solicitors, Chartered Accountants, Banks, Franchise Consultants and Insurance Brokers.
  • The suitability of a business to become a franchise

Franchising is bigger than the whole of the energy sector, including the electricity, water and gas utilities, and almost as big as the whole of the armed forces. The BFA provides quality independent advice to those who are considering franchising in either capacity"

In order to allow prospective Franchisors to have a thorough understanding of the business format, the guide also contains some of the information provided to potential franchisees in their guide. It will introduce the reader to experts in the field of franchising accredited by the BFA, such as established professional advisors and experienced franchise lawyers.

The Ethics of Franchising
This best practice guide by bfa Affiliate Martin Mendelsohn, is an update and extension of the previous two editions. When the BFA was founded in 1977 it adopted a Code of Ethics and the Association promoted itself and its members as ethical business people. The first BFA Guide to the Ethics of Franchising was published in 1987, based on the first Code. The second was published after the adoption of the EFF code and the third edition has been published this month.

The guide has been restructured slightly from previous editions but, more importantly, the BFA’s National Franchisee Forum was consulted and given the opportunity to contribute to this edition.

The changes made from the second edition are:

  • an updated EFF definition of franchising;
  • an expansion of the text detailing franchisor services to franchisees, at the request of the Franchisee Forum;
  • an expanded treatment of issues arising from franchise agreement renewals and the value of a franchise business;
  • a change to performance clauses - the original target was set for franchisees to achieve 50 per cent of sales projections, but increased to 70 per cent on the advice of the Franchisee Forum;
  • an update of the BFA’s dispute resolution procedures using Arbitration and Mediation;
  • a comprehensive index.
